Discussion thread 1

Paul's weaknest is the moment whereby he lose money and all that will make him feel sad, even to the point whereby he goes crazy and mad, ruining every single thing and finally his life. That is why he was unable to live to the age of seventy. The cards were stacked against him by his greed and weaknesses. Everything was ruined, by the hands of the winner. Although he was lucky in winning the race bets, he did not had the ultimate luck of living till the age of seventy. Perhaps that was the result of his weakness.

Discussion thread 2

Tay Soon was haunted by his greed of money when the market stocks suddenly go on a downstride. He certainly did not want to give up when he lost all his gains and was hoping to gain back his money. It was hopeless and yet he endured on, hoping a miracle will happen, having the blazing desire to win back, to take revenge, to bring back the nerves, the time, the brain. Everything was brought down to nothing after all the efforts are wasted because of greed.

Lottery

Ah Boh was simply mad about her lottery. She had translated all the objects that she think could be her 'lucky number' into the numbers she think that will win the lottery. From dreams, to newborns and even accidents. She did not cared much about the bodies of the accident as she is fasinated about the money that she will win but it will not come by easily.

The Rocking Horse Winner

I think it was Oscar Cresswell and Bassett the garderner and partly the mother's fault. If Oscar and Basset have not lent him the few pounds he will never go into horse-racing gambling. Now that he is winning more and more, he sort of gone crazy. The mother who wanted to send him to the seaside decided not to at the end and that was her mistake. If she had stopped him he will not die of his craziness over luck.

1. I think that the author longed to return to the past where days were carefree. He also thought about the funny moments. He felt the warmth of his school life and wished he could go back and experience it once again for it is a wonderful memory. Its the goodness of those days that I think he wanted to remain forever at the carefree days of school life.

2. I am writing a poem of 4 stanzas of couplets below. It was when I am still young and childish. My memories came to me and I composed the poem.

It was those days,
That my precious time flew away.

I flunk all my homework,
And my examination results are junk.

Talking about computer games?
I can name a thousand of their names.

So what about my friends?
They always ask me to go and play LAN.

I like the poet named Jane Taylor (23 September 1783 – 13 April 1824), was an English poet and novelist. Together with her sister, Ann Taylor, they composed the poem Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Although this was Taylor’s most famous piece of work, the poem was almost always uncredited,
"Its opening stanza persists as if it were folklore, the name of its creator almost entirely forgotten.” Quoted from the information on wikipedia. This was the part whereby it captured my attention totally, causing me to read deeper and soon know her more. Such a great masterpiece, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, which was as today used worldwide but she was uncredited and the authorship was generally forgotten.
Jane and Ann’s early work have often been confused of authorship as they were often published together. Ann Taylor's son, Josiah Gilbert, wrote in her biography, "two little poems–'My Mother,' and 'Twinkle, twinkle, little Star,' are perhaps, more frequently quoted than any; the first, a lyric of life, was by Ann, the second, of nature, by Jane; and they illustrate this difference between the sisters."
The sisters were born in an extensive literary family with their mother writing many works of advice and their father an engraver and later a dissenting minister. Such advantages may allow the sisters to be influenced with the art of poetry and to let them have the potential to become famous.
When Jane Taylor died of cancer at an age of 40 years old, her mind is still “teeming with unfulfilled projects.” A quote from wikipedia. She had certainly published many famous works but the authorship forgotten, she was still a renowned English poet and novelist worldwide, or at least in Enlgand. After about two centuries have passed after her composing of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, people from all over the world are still using the poem for kids. Well I can say that 2 centuries of wear and tear could not tear down the twinkling stars high up in the sky!

Below are the 3 poems i have found:

The Violet

Down in a green and shady bed,
A modest violet grew;
Its stalk was bent, it hung its head
As if to hide from view.
And yet it was a lovely flower,
Its colour bright and fair;
It might have graced a rosy bower,
Instead of hiding there.

Yet thus it was content to bloom,
In modest tints arrayed;
And there diffused a sweet perfume
,
Within the silent shade.

Then let me to the valley go
This pretty flower to see;
That I may also learn to grow
In sweet humility.

The Village Green

On the cheerful village green,
Skirted round with houses small,
All the boys and girls are seen,
Playing there with hoop and ball.

Now they frolic hand in hand,
Making many a merry chain;
Then they form a warlike band,
Marching o'er the level plain.

Now ascends the worsted ball,
High it rises in the air,
Or against the cottage wall,
Up and down it bounces there.

Then the hoop, with even pace,
Runs before the merry throngs;
Joy is seen in every face,
Joy is heard in cheerful songs.

Rich array, and mansions proud,
Gilded toys, and costly fare,
Would not make the little crowd
Half so happy as they are.

Then, contented with my state,
Where true pleasure may be seen,
Let me envy not the great,
On a cheerful village green.

The Disappointment

In tears to her mother poor Harriet came,
Let us listen to hear what she says:
"O see, dear mamma, it is pouring with rain,
We cannot go out in the chaise.

"All the week I have long'd for this holiday so,
And fancied the minutes were hours;
And now that I'm dress'd and all ready to go,
Do look at those terrible showers! “

"I'm sorry, my dear, " her kind mother replied,
The rain disappoints us to-day;
But sorrow still more that you fret for a ride,
In such an extravagant way.

"These slight disappointments are sent to prepare
For what may hereafter befall;
For seasons of real disappointment and care,
Which commonly happen to all.

"For just like to-day with its holiday lost,
Is life and its comforts at best:
Our pleasures are blighted, our purposes cross'd,
To teach us it is not our rest.

"And when those distresses and crosses appear,
With which you may shortly be tried,
You'll wonder that ever you wasted a tear
On merely the loss of a ride.

"But though the world's pleasures are fleeting and vain,
Religion is lasting and true;
Real pleasure and peace in her paths you may gain,
Nor will disappointment ensue.”

Why do I like the poem?

I like the poem because I can see that the writer fit in a lot of descriptions about the objects and they all comes together to become a very descriptive and interesting poem to read. The author also uses some repetition of words to make the words capture the attention of readers. He even used some non-English words which also capture my attention as it is fresh and only some poems have non-English words. I think this poem is well-written and is also very descriptive.
The Bear-men of Qolqepunku
(or: the magical ice of Peru)

(Foreshadow)

High up in the Andes of Peru
The Ukukus wander on

Glacier, frost and snow

Dressed in furry clocks and masks
They trek to find the mountains ice

Of sacred healing powers

The Bear-men, they are called:
In the old language of the Quechua;

Guardians of the ice

They cut the ice in solid blocks
Carried on backs, down mountain paths,

To family, friends, and livestock

Ah! Sixteen-thousand feet high, comes
A pilgrimage Qoyllur Rit i' ?

Year, after year, after year.

The Bear-men-, silently watch
Their glacier, slowly disappear

As if in thin air!...

They've now decide to leave the ice
The magical ice of Peru, in place

As warming temperatures rise?

This is helping the Ice Cap
Evaporate, in the 21st Century-

Perhaps this is a whisper?

"Is this the world's end?"

This poem is by Mr, Dennis Siluk

"Guardians of the ice" (Personification)
In this case guardians were personified and the author used it to make it look important.

"Their glacier, slowly disappear
As if in thin air!... " (Hyperbole)
The author use hyperbole to make the phrase above look strong.

Who is your favourite/least favourite character in Village by the Sea? State your reasons.

In this case, I think that Hari is the main character and I liked him best. What are my reasons? It is simple. He works hard and even left his hometown and went to Bombay whereby he was totally new and unfit in his new environment. Even all the difficulties and setbacks he experienced through his progress of adapting to the new environment, he showed no sign of complain and he continued to do his best and did well in his job. As the story goes by towards the ending, Hari did make some money and he was able to support in the medical fees of his ill mother. Everything was back to normal in the end, his mother well away from the illness and his father who has turned over a new leaf. All's well that ends well !

Comment please.

Which part of Village by the Sea do you like best?

In my opinion, i guess that the part whereby the book informs us that Hari has reached Bombay and he was sort of left alone, or you can say it in an unpleasant way, isolated. That part of the book captured my attention the most and I regard it as the climax of the story. You may be asking, "Don't you think that the part whereby Hari's father turn over a new leaf is a more suitable climax?" Well I think that its not because Hari was left alone and he did not have a roof over his head at all at first! That is the part which kept my interest to continue reading what that village boy would do. This is only a short part of the whole book Vilaage by the Sea, but it is a so called "Attention Seeker".

Confessions of a gaming addict

Well, I hereby confessed that I am a gaming addict and I wish that my peers and even teachers could guide me along to reinforcing a strong mind to self control. I guess games are just too addictive, especially real-time war-based strategy games, thats my kind of enjoyment. I guess this will have to be put to a stop as it will affect my studies and even the relationship with my family members and peers as gaming will cause me to reject all requests to go out to play sporting activities with my friends. I will also be neglecting chat conversations with my family members and it will cause a communication probelm in within the family. I guess thats all I have to say, give me some advices please, thank you.

Is progress necessarily beneficial for society?

Of course progress is necessary for the beneficial of the society, as you can see, if a country does not have much significant progress, the people will have low education, low sanitation, crimes will crop up, and hence the government will encounter great difficulties in solving all these social problems. Even if the people were poor and they do not create crimes, the places where they live will also be rural and all of which surrounds their living environment will be natural. That means the government will want to improve the economy of the countries by using these lands and the people living there will protest. So I think that the people should be first educated by people from the cities before the government will want to upgrade the area they live. A progress can be beneficial to the society if it was progressed in a systematic and flawless way. Otherwise, that so called "progress" may just end up being a progress to create more trouble for the society.

I rather be the city rat than the country rat.

I disagree with this statement "I rather be the city rat than the country rat" as I like to relax my mind and not focus all only on studies and work for it will be very stressful and can also cause health problems due to the stress. I will rather prefer to be "a rat who like to go to the city and back to the country" as I can take time off the work that should be done and let my stress out for a moment. This will also let me spend time with my family together and relax our minds together, as we will forget about work for a few days. Now we keep our minds free and distress all that had accumulated throughout those days where we worked hard.

Even still the life of a country rat is so relaxed and it feels as though you are in wonderland, I won't want to be devoted to the "country rat's style" as I think it would not be bright for my future. If I had the country rat's mindset, I believe that now I will only enjoy myself, with all the games and consoles as I could not afford to go overseas. Thats how I comprehend the country rat.

Now, a city rat isn't my type of enjoyment too. The environment will make us study and study, work and work, all day long and we will be all stressed up with things we need to do. Things like "How am I going to finish it?" "What will happen if I miss the deadline?" will always be on our mind and we will be piled up with a mountain high of stress. This isn't good for our health and I think that our brain needs an occasional rest to be able to go on better and stronger to take up more challenges.

In conclusion, I think that too much of something isn't good and so does too little of something. We need an adequate balance of things that will keep us going well in good proportion.

Infocomm Studies lesson is fun!

Hi everyone, I just realise that Infocomm Studies lesson is fun, maybe because the teacher teaches well and I kinda like his teaching style. I feel that silence during his lesson may be one of the contributing factors to the reason why I like the lesson. The other factor is that the content (C++) is interesting and can also capture my attention quite well. Maybe it is because that the C++ is of some challenge to me, simply because it has many terms to learn and rules and regulations. That may let me feel that this is a challenge and I must do well and overcome the challenge.

Who the "real lamb" is.

Who was the real lamb in the story "Lamb to the Slaughter"? If you view it from all angles you will realise that actually everything main character in the story is the lamb. All of them can be lambs, but I feel that the person who can best suit the title of the lamb is the baby still in his mother's womb.

Firstly, lets talk about Mr Patrick Maloney.
Mr Maloney can actually be the lamb due to the fact that he was murdered for his innocence. He was just standing by the side of the window without knowing that Mrs Maloney was actually carrying a lamb and advancing towards him having an intention to kill him using the lamb leg in her hand. He can be a lamb, but his level of "lambness" is not high enough.

Secondly, lets talk about Mrs Patrick Maloney.
Why do i say that she is the lamb? Reason is, Mr Maloney had told her many things that hurt her deeply. Mr Maloney is also being insensitive towards her feeling resulting his wife to kill him. She also killed Mr Maloney on her act of impulse, because she was probably mentally unstable at that point of time as she was informed of the traumatizing news. Although she was hurt deeply, she did not lose her thinking skills, as she created a perfect alibi to escape the laws. Well anyway, she had a higher level of "lambness" than her husband.

Thirdly, its the policemen that came to investigate this case.
They end up eating the only evidence of the person who killed Mr Maloney, which is Mrs Maloney. They are the real lamb because they were tricked by Mrs Maloney to eat up the lamb leg which was the only key to unlock the murder case. They were fooled by her and I think they can be the lamb. They were the one who can investigate and crack this case open but in the end they were stuck and i think the case will be closed. So hence, they have a higher level of "lambness" than Mrs Maloney, but the title eventually was awarded to the baby in my opinion.

Lastly, the baby as the lamb.
The reason is that he was still unborn and he had already lost his father. When he was born and more knowledgeable and can understand things well, he will know abour the tragic incident that had happened to his father. This will hurt him and he may become mentally unstable as to why this had happened and he will keep on questioning himself why this had happened and so on. So i think that he is the most suitable person to win the championship of being the lamb.

Story: Plot-Driven Story

This article is a plot-driven story. Below will be a brief introduction to the article. A man named Jay Chia Shao Kiat, who is a singaporean, escaped from custody under the charge of Dangerous Drugs Act, which he faces death sentence. How did he escaped? He escape when the vehicle stopped, and he shoved one of the policeman out of the vehicle and ran away with his hands still handcuffed. The other policeman could not give chase because he had to look after the other two detainees which were also onboard the vehicle. This man escaped due to his luck that day. The reason why i think that the detainee could escape is because that the policemen were not alert enough, thats why when Chia shoved that policeman out, it was quite an easy task. This matter is still in the midst of investigation, so I dare not make any not proven conclusions. I think that there should at least be 4 policemen escorting detainees which had been charged with heavy crimes.

End of blog post.

Current Affairs-News In Class: WORLD'S FASTEST MAN.

I am Dr Tan, the world's fastest man. Do you youths know how I succeeded to become the world's fastest man?
Here is why:
I went for jogging in the park everyday since primary school for 30minutes. When i was in secondary school, i procceeded to run 2.4km every time I am free. If I was still free at that time,
I will go for exercises to build up my stamina. These mentioned are major reasons why i was able to become the world's fastest man. Teenages of your age should especially exercise because this will allow you to be fit and strong, and also be more resistance against diseases. Exercise can also distress you when you are stressed out by school work, homework given by your parents, enrichment classes and so on. Exercise can also help to keep you alert during lessons and you will always be on the alert for anything that may not catch someone else' sight. So keep on to exercise because it can keep you fit and healthy. Remember to eat lots of healthy food too!

News in Class: WORLD'S LARGEST DAM

Todays post is on the world's largest dam, also known as the Three Gorges Dam. Is it healthy for the environment or does it cause further harm? Below are three point of views.

Firstly, dams are built to use the kinetic energy of the water to turn it into electrical energy.
This is healthy for the environment and it reduces the energy used, but on the other side, the building of the dam will create polution, which brings us to the next point of view.

The second point of view, which shows that the building of the dam causes heavy popluation in the river and it harms the marine life living in the river which once was clean and suitable for them to live in. Now that the dam has been built, the river has been heavily poluted and many marine life would have died. This means that the dam caused impact on the environment.

The last point of view, which explains about the destruction of the environment around the river. As the dam is built, the water level will rise and it will flood the area around the river and kills many plants by the river. This point of view also concludes that the dam is harmful towards the environment.

Today is fun!!! (Davis's birthday)

Woohoo! Today is so fun!!! Well I was overly-excited today morning as my friends and I ( including Alivin from our class ), went ice-skating! Haha, this was the first time I ever ice-skated before and its was of alot of fun! Of course, I fell about 5 times before I grew accustomed to the slipperiness of the ice. I had a very bad fall: I fell, and I gotten up. in the midway i fell again... I stood up and steady myself and I fell again!!! Today is so unlucky, 3 consecutive falls within 10seconds. Well anyway, I bought the bear of Mr Bean's and gave it as a birthday present to Davis! To sum up, I enjoyed myself pretty well today, if not for the blisters I acquired after the the ice-skating...

Current affairs: Fishy business

As a menber of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, I would like to raise the awareness of the cruelty of whaling in Japan. Why am I posting this issue at a public forum? The reason is simple: Whaling is on the rise in Japan as whales have long been a source of food, oil, and crafts' material and more were killed for them each day.
Japan began scientific research hunts to provide a basis for the resumption of sustainable whaling. The number of whales caught under the project is considerably lower than the number caught under the commercial catch. The IWC Scientific Committee collects up to date data on catch limits and catches taken since 1985. Numbers have ranged from less than 200 in 1985 to close to 1,000 in 2007.The research is conducted by the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), a privately-owned, non-profit institution. The institute receives its funding from government subsidies and Kyodo Senpaku, which handles processing and marketing of byproducts such as whale meat. Japan carries out its research in two areas: the North-West Pacific Ocean (JARPN II) and the Antarctic Ocean (JARPA) Southern Hemisphere catch. The 2007/08 JARPA mission had a quota of 900 minke whales and 50 fin whales.
Major discoveries claimed by JARPA 1 include: finding the population structure of mink whales in the Antarctic is healthy; detecting change in the ecosystem of the Antarctic Ocean; finding "very low level" of contaminants in minke whales.
As consumption of fish in Japan has shrunk, Japanese fisheries companies have expanded abroad and started facing pressure from partners and environmental groups. Five large fishing companies transferred their whaling fleet shares to public interest corporations in 2006. In 2007, Kokuyo and Maruha, two of Japan's four largest fishing companies, decided to end their sales of whale meat due to pressure from partners and environmental groups in the US.
Anti-whaling governments and groups have strongly opposed Japan's research program. Greenpeace argues that whales are endangered and must be protected. The Japanese government maintains that certain populations are strong enough to sustain a managed hunt. The latest IWC estimate for put the Southern Hemisphere Minke whale population at 761,000 (510,000 - 1,140,000 in the 95% confidence estimate).
In my own opinion, I do think that whaling is cruel and I think that adequate amount of whaling is still suitable for the consumption of whale meat. If overwhaling occurs, it should be stopped immediately and the fishing companies should whale less so that the whale population can be restored. If nothing is done to stop overwhaling, many species of whales may extinct and vanish, only leaving behind the bones.

Not going to see my brother for 2 weeks...

Last lunch until he books out...

My brother is enlisted into a full-time NS man today. My family and I see him off at Pulau Tekong and I did not feel quite good not having him at home for 2 weeks as I often play cards and games with him whenever we are both free. In the morning, we reached pulau Tekong at about 8.00am++ and the enlistees and the visitors went separate ways. We, the visitors went with the guide and went round the training camp. As for the enlistees, they went to have some basic training. We also attended a seminar about what they have for the enlistees in the NS free package. When the session has ended, the visitors are allowed to go infront and take a look at the things. One of the items is the rifle. I held the rifle for the 1st time in my life!! It weighs about 4kg-6kg which is quite light for me. I was so fascinated by the scope the moment I look into it. Its vision is so cool! After that, the enlistees met with us at the auditorium. They took their oath and we sang the national anthem. Finally, its lunch time and thats the last time that I sat down with my brother eating lunch until he books out.

What a tiring day!! I went home and I fell asleep...

The annual good days...

I have not posted posts for a few days, now its time to blog alot!!

What happen within this two days:

Day 1:
I woke up at 9.30am and prepared to go to my friends' house to visit them. After i have my breakfast, i went to his house to visit his family, then moved on to the playing part. He has a PS3 which is so cool and two computers. I 1st played with my friend a multiplayer game against computer gamers and after that more friends came. We stopped in the middle of the game and we started playing the PS3. It was so addictive that I could not get my eyes off them! So we kept playing until we have to eat our lunch. ( Pizzas ) We moved on to visit more friends and it was till night that we reached our last destination. We played cards, mahjong, and so on... It is until 12mn that all of us go home.

Day 2:
Today is even much more fun than yesterday! Some friends came to my house to have their lunch. Before we have our lunch, my friends and i played computer games, 4 computers for each of us to play. Then we played a game and went to eat our lunch, sitting on the table waiting for us to enjoy. After our lunch, we played till dinner and went on playing after that till about 9.30pm. I went to have a hot bathe after that and I was here, sitting at the computer publishing a post.

Being a treasurer in the CMC.

Being a treasurer in the CMC will not be an easy task as all the money i will have to handle will be my 1st time handling huge sums of money. Then why did I want to be a treasurer then? Reason is simple: I can have the moment of feeling that I am getting rich the moment I look at the sum of money! ( Of course I will not take the money to be my own ) Besides being a treasurer, i also volunteered to be incharge of the class notice board. That will be a challenge for me as I will ahve to finish it within 2 days! ( today and tomorrow )

The 1st CRAMP

Today is the 3rd time of my training for track and field high-jump, which is also the 1st time i got a leg cramp. Talk about leg cramp, how does it feel? My leg felt a bit numb combo with excruciating pain. Sad that I cannot do PE tomorrow. I hope that my leg will recover soon so as not to be a burden for me when I go visiting my friends house during Chinese New Year. Good luck and wish myself well!
